How Jeff Siegel Did In Recent Past Days

Handicappers Bob Selvin and Jeff Siegel, who team up every racing day with a full card telephone seminar at the current Southern California track, post their selections from yesterday’s races for your perusal. If we’re hot, you’ll know it and if we’re not, well, you’ll know that too. Judge for yourself if this is the kind of information you’d like to have before going to the races. FIRST RACE

Pass – No Play

SECOND RACE

Pass – No Play

THIRD RACE

Exacta Box – 1 Proud Garrison; 4 Thunder and Ice

Proud Garrison takes a sharp drop in class following a solid third place effort here in late October.  She may have problems but if she has at least one more good one left in her, the Mullins-trained filly figures very tough.  Thunder and Ice seems like the speed of the speed and will take them as far as she can over a track that has been kind to front runners of late.

FOURTH RACE (Best Play)

Single/Straight Play – 6 Liberian Freighter

Liberian Freighter loves this turf course and continues to improve for Drysdale.  Flores should have him on or near the lead throughout and at 5/2 on the ML represents our prime straight play of the day.

FIFTH RACE (Best Play)

Single/Straight Play – 7 Stately Appeal

Stately Appeal is most effective as a late-running sprinter and in a below par field for the level should be able to produce the last run.  This is our second prime straight play of the day.

SIXTH RACE
Exacta Box – 4 Sister Lucy; 5 Wild Apart
Sister Lucy drops into a claimer for the first time and her kind of zip should be very dangerous in a soft field.  On numbers, she’s a solid fit.  Wild Apart removes blinkers after a bit of a vacation and makes her first start for a tag and her first for Walsh.  A bullet work over the track should have her right on edge.

SEVENTH RACE
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 2 Contentious; 5 Christmas Ship; 6 Kayd Kodaun
Contentious makes his local debut for Harty and has worked in sharp style to appear ready to roll.  Her form in New York makes her a solid fit with these.  Christmas Ship always gives her best and won’t have to improve much to take it all.  Kayd Kodaun looked good winning her U.S. debut vs. softer and with a forward move today figures in the fray once again.

EIGHTH RACE
Exacta/Trifectra Box – 1 Axiom; 4 For the House; 7 Rhodine’s Kid
Axiom drops to the bottom for good trainer Ellis, switches to Rosario and has back figures that make him a threat.  For the House bids for his third straight win and must be respected once again.  Rhodine’s Kind takes a nosedive in class and if he’s anywhere near healthy he’ll be hard to beat.

HOLLYWOOD PARK

(Note:  use all horses listed below in rolling daily doubles, Pick-3s, Pick-4s, and Pick-6)

FIRST RACE

Single/Straight Play – 2 Justdontcallmejeri

Justdontcallmejeri has an improving pattern for Mitchell, lands the good rail, and has little to beat.  Bejarano stays aboard and this juvenile gelding should be along in plenty of time.

SECOND RACE

Exacta Box – 1 Pocosin’s Game Boy; 7 Red Arrow

Pocosin’s Game Boy ran well over the course in a similar spot earlier this month and should enjoy a good pace prompting trip inside.  He won’t have to improve much to beat this field.  Red Arrow represents stranger danger for Sadler and has trained like he’s fit and ready to fire a big shot.

THIRD RACE

Single/Straight Play – 7 Mama Lula

Mama Lula is sharp, genuine and consistent and retains Bejarano.  She’s a prototype late running sprinter and should be able to produce the last run.

FOURTH RACE

Exacta Box – 3 El Gato Malo; 6 Peace Chant

El Gato Malo has worked like he’s fit to fire in his comeback and you know he likes this track and can fire fresh.  He’s strictly the one to beat.  Peace Chant should get a comfortable trip outside, has competitive numbers, and seems like a logical exacta partner with ‘Malo.

FIFTH RACE

Single/Straight Play – 8 Railroad

Railroad had a good recent tightener off a long layoff and could very well be fitter and sharper today.  The drop in class might be considered a tad suspicious but if this Koriner-trained gelding moves forward he’ll be tough to beat while on or near the lead throughout.

SIXTH RACE (Best Play)
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 2 Elusive Pleasure; 6 Cajun Corredor; 11 Mr. Inn Zone
Elusive Pleasure looked good graduating and with continued improvement figures tough right back in this starter’s affair.  He earned a sharp figure recently and represents strong value at 6-1 on the ML.  Cajun Corredor just missed in a similar spot earlier this month and should be running on strongly again.  Mr. Inn Zone seems better than his 15-1 on the ML odds would indicate and from his comfortable outside post figures to be in a good pace pressing spot throughout.  This is our first prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

SEVENTH RACE
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 3 Precious Kitten; 5 Rosinka; 9 Cocoa Beach
Precious Kitten ran very well to be third in the BC Mile and if she performs similarly today she’ll be tough to beat.  Rosinka lost a toughie at Santa Anita and with only slight improvement could be a factor with these at a nice price (12-1 on the ML).  Cocoa Beach has won on turf so the surface switch shouldn’t bother her.  She continues to train in smart style and should fire another big shot.

EIGHTH RACE (Best Play)
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 4 Cut the Check; 10 Mr. Hot Stuff; 12 Defense King
Cut the Check earned a good figure when third vs. similar recently and with another forward move today could be tough to beat.  Mr. Hot Stuff exits a very strong heat and seems sure to improve with experience for Harty.  Defense King seems better than shown while also exiting the same race as Mr. Hot Stuff and has trained well since.  He lands the outside post and if he breaks well he’ll be within range throughout.  This is my second prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

NINTH RACE
Exacta/Trifectra Box – 2 Court Vision; 3 Cowboy Cal; 7 Gio Ponti
Court Vision comes here a winner for Mott and may have found a home on turf.  He’ll be rolling late.  Cowboy Cal has won four of five lifetime on turf in good company and always must be respected.  Johnny V. comes out to ride.  Gio Ponti has been beaten at odds-on in his last pair but keeps firing bullets and is more than good enough to win with his best effort.

TENTH RACE
Single/Straight Play – 10 Catsalot
In a soft field, Catsalot has little to beat exiting a much stronger race, and the O’Neill-trained filly retains Gomez.  She looks like a short price to graduate.

(Note:  use all horses listed below in rolling daily doubles, Pick-3s, Pick-4s, and Pick-6)

FIRST RACE

Exacta Box – 5 Concerto’s Thunder; 8 Tempting Charm

Concerto’s Thunder drops into the maiden claiming ranks for the first time and seems sure to improve.  He fits on numbers and Gryder should have him within striking range throughout.  Tempting Charm got burned up pressing a hot pace in a very tough spot in his debut and quite likely is better than that race will indicate.  He faces much softer, lands a comfortable outside post, and is worthy of another look.

SECOND RACE

Exacta Box – 1 Bachelorette One; 7 Keladora

Bachelorette One is a threat at any distance and should be primed for a big effort following a sharp runner up try sprinting here earlier this monthg.  She should enjoy a good ground-saving trip from the rail, retains Smith, and figures to be rolling late.  Keladora returns to the claiming ranks, switches to Rosario, and rates a big look off her best effort.

THIRD RACE

Pass – No Play

FOURTH RACE

Exacta Box – 1 Miss Dolce; 9 Lady Lumberjack

Miss Dolce has worked like a runner for Sadler and this $475,000 2-year-old in training purchase figures live if she can leave cleanly from the rail.  Lady Lumberjack, the likely choice and one to beat, flashed promise in her debut when a sharp second in a legitimate race and figures to improve from her comfortable outside post.

FIFTH RACE (Best Play)

Exacta/Trifecta Box – 1 Bittel Road; 4 Battle of Hastings; 7 Bourbon Bay

Bittel Road flipped in the paddock on Breeders’ Cup day and likely lost his best chance even before the race.  He gets a chance to make amends and if minds his manners he’ll be the one to beat.  Battle of Hastings is a sharp and talented English invader and should fire a big shot off the plane.  Bourbon Bay adds blinkers and should be rolling in the final furlong.  This is our first prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

SIXTH RACE
Pass – No Play

SEVENTH RACE
Pass – No Play

EIGHTH RACE (Best Play)
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 1 Small But Mighty; 9 Carrie With a C; 11 Unworldly Heat
Small But Mighty bids for her third straight and with continued improvement she’ll be a strong factor once again despite the rail and the raise in class.  This extended sprint distance seems perfect for her style.  Carrie With a C has won 12 of 28 lifetime and always must be respected.  This drop in class returns her to her claimed level.  Unworldly Heat earned a good figure graduating and this lightly-raced filly likely will continue to improve with experience.  She should be in an ideal pace prompting trip outside.  This is our second prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

NINTH RACE
Exacta/Trifectra Box – 1 Delta Storm; 2 One Union; 8 Joe Bravo
Delta Storm lands the good rail and is thoroughly genuine and consistent (first or second in 15 of 25 career starts).  He should be within range throughout.  One Union was overmatched in the Breeders’ Cup but isn’t today.  He’s run well over the course in the past and figures tough with his best effort.  Joe Bravo is rounding to form now for Frankel and may be the most dangerous of the closers.

TENTH RACE
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 3 Threat; 4 Skim the Pool; 13 Soldier Betty
Threat has finished in the money in all five career starts and is overdue for a win.  This drop to the bottom rung may be all she needs.  Skim the Pool closed some ground in her debut in a race she had a right to need and figures to move forward in her second career outing for O’Neill.  Soldier Betty has improving speed figures for Headley, retains Smith, and should be running on strongly late.

HOLLYWOOD PARK

(Note:  use all horses listed below in rolling daily doubles, Pick-3s, Pick-4s, and Pick-6)

FIRST RACE

Single/Straight Play – 4 Zetterberg

Zetterberg drops another notch following a solid third place effort in a strong race for the level.  Flores stays aboard and the Dollase-trained colt beats this group with anything close to his best effort.

SECOND RACE (Best Play)

Exacta/Trifecta Box – 1 Star Redeemer; 4 Beauteous Maximus; 9 Leavethegateopen

Star Redeemer just missed in a photo in a similar affair earlier this month and switches to Bejarano.  If he can avoid trouble from the rail, the Sadler-trained colt will be right there again.  Beauteous Maximus disappointed last trip but adds blinkers today and could snap back.  Gomez rides him back, a positive sign.  Leavethegateopen is improving with racing for Sadler, lands the cozy outside post and helps make it a tough affair.  This is my first prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

THIRD RACE

Exacta/Trifecta Box – 3 Saxophone; 5 Satellite; 7 Brooker

Saxophone won gamely at this level last month across town and a similar effort today will make him tough right back.  Satellite drops a notch, retains Talamo and fits well off his game score two runs back.  Brooker, first off the claim for West, drops sharply for his return and could fire a bit shot fresh for a clever outfit.

FOURTH RACE

Single/Straight Play – 3 Skippy Due

Skippy Due is racing in sharp form and catches a pace scenario that should promote his stalking style.  He likes to finish second more than first, but doesn’t have all that much beat and exits a hot race.  At 7/2 on the ML in a short field, he represents strong value.

FIFTH RACE

Single/Straight Play – 4 Superfecta

Superfecta looked good winning his last but actually drops a notch while seeking a repeat.  If he has one more good one left in him, the West-trained gelding will make it two in a row.

SIXTH RACE (Best Play)
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 6 Emmy Darling; 8 Habaya; 10 Century Park
Emmy Darling didn’t run badly on Breeders’ Cup day and won’t have to improve much to beat this field.  Habaya is a talented and promising easterner with competitive numbers and a closing style that makes her very dangerous.  Century Park has a win over the course against maidens and continues to improve with experience.  With another forward move today she’ll be a factor at a price.  This is my second prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

SEVENTH RACE
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 3 Red Jasper; 4 Bubsy; 11 Indy Olmo
Red Jasper exits a fast race while flashing improvement for Sadler and could upset this field with another forward move.  Bubsy should be prominent throughout and fits well on figures.  Indy Olmo wants to be held up and allowed to run late and with that kind of ride could produce the last run.

EIGHTH RACE
Single/Straight Play – 9 Whatsthescript
Whatsthescript loves this turf course and should be along in time.  He ran well despite a poor post on Breeders’ Cup day and has trained sharply since.

NINTH RACE
Exacta Box – 1a Swift Demand; 7 My Summer Slew
Swift Demand, second in a hot race over the track earlier this month, regains Gomez and should be within striking range throughout.  My Summer Slew graduated at first asking in fast time up north and should be competitive vs. winners on this circuit.

TENTH RACE
Exacta Box – 9 Presidential Elect; 12 Midnight Corredor
Presidential Elect is rounding to form for O’Neill and with only slight improvement figures to earn his diploma in a modest maiden claimer.  Midnight Corredor is better than his last shows and figures tough if he gets the patient ride he seems to prefer.

FIRST RACE

Pass – No Play

SECOND RACE

Pass – No Play

THIRD RACE

Exacta Box – 2 Silver Vista; 6 Plan for Fun

Silver Vista looked good beating a bottom rung field recently and with a similar effort today could be tough right back.  Plan for Fun loves to win and is another who figures tough with a repeat of his last.

FOURTH RACE

Exacta Box - 2 It’s Partytime; 4 Pokermom

It’s Partytime closed a gap in his debut vs. tougher and today drops for the money run.  She earned a decent number even in defeat in her bow and won’t have to improve much at all to graduate from this modest band.  Pokermom adds blinkers and likely is better than her first race indicates.

FIFTH RACE

Exacta Box – 5 Parko; 7 Dadsalittleunusual

Parko lost a toughie up north but gets a chance to make amends.  He’s long overdue for a win.  Dadsalittleunusual, first off the claim for Mitchell, can handle the route, switches to Bejarano, and seems sure to improve for new connections.  He’s strictly the one to beat.

SIXTH RACE
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 3 Peppermint Lounge; 4 Coco Belle
Peppermint Lounge has improving numbers and gets tested for class today.  Bejarano should have within striking range throughout.  Coco Belle is fresh and training well for Sadler and her best puts her right there.

SEVENTH RACE (Best Play)
Exacta/Trifecta Box – 1 Ten Meropa; 6 Slew’s Tiznow; 8 Liberian Freighter
Ten Meropa stretches out for the first time for Mullins and there’s no reason he won’t enjoy the extra ground.  Slew’s Tiznow was overmatched in the Breeders’ Cup Mile but he isn’t today.  The O’Neill-trained colt will be a strong threat if he can reproduce his best main track form on turf.  Liberian Freighter looked good beating lesser recently with a sharp speed figure and gets tested for class today.  This is our prime exacta/trifecta play of the day.

EIGHTH RACE (Best Play)
Single/Straight Play – 2 Quite the Man
Quite the Man found his best stride too late when tipping his hand to be third in a similar spot earlier this month.  He’s a second-off-the-claim play for Hollendorfer and should be along in plenty of time with the switch to Gomez.  This is our prime straight play of the day.
